poem: Garbageman

This was inspired by a sight I saw on a recent bus trip to college.

Garbageman

He hops uncertainly onto a mechanical bus
stumbles a little
sits down with slight anxiety,
the garbageman looks around him,
sees a stylish woman with a vulgar gold bag beside him,
automatically shifting just the tiniest inch away
as if the invisible germs and bacteria on him
would leap and gnash their teeth upon her
Crabtree & Evelyn-lotioned arm,
he is garbed in a dusty long-sleeved green shirt
faded dirty-white cap
typical clothes of a garbageman,

But oh, what a curious sight are his feet;
his feet are snug tight in a
small pair of white Bata school shoes.
